There are many points during our lives when we tell ourselves that we want to get back into a healthy routine. Often, we end up thinking about getting healthy in terms of exercising more or losing some weight. While these are good goals, many of us find we need advice, if it has been a while since we have had an exercise or eating plan. We can be tempted to jump right in and imagine we will only eat healthy food and we will exercise multiple times every week. The problem is if we jump in too fast, we are likely to struggle to maintain our healthy habits.

Step 1: Doctor Check In

At the start of almost any fitness class or program we attend the person leading the event will say “before starting this activity talk to your doctor.” They are right, we should all consider seeing our doctor before starting a new fitness or other health regiment, especially if we have not done so recently. Our doctor will often talk to us and might even run a series of tests to make sure we are healthy and are able to start the fitness program we have chosen.

Sometimes these tests will be obvious such as tests to make sure our hearts are healthy enough for physical activity. Sometimes these will look like other routine screening to make sure our bodies are functioning correctly. If it has been a while we should not be surprised if our doctor orders regular STI screenings, kidney screenings or thyroid functioning screenings. While we might wonder why we need these exams or tests before hitting the gym, in truth they simply help make sure our new health program is not harmful to our bodies.

If we are run down with a virus, we might not have the energy we need to start a fitness routine or we may push ourselves too hard and cause long lasting problems. These screenings can also provide a baseline so that we can see how our health is improving over time.

Step 2: Understand Health Goals

Saying we want to be healthy is a general goal that can be very hard to make progress towards. It is important that we create SMART goals around our health. These are goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and anchored within a time frame. For example if we have a goal to lose weight a SMART goal might look like saying we will add one 30 min dance fitness class each week for the next 3 months. This type of health goal is much more likely to bring us success. The better our goals the more likely we will be successful which will encourage us to take even more healthy steps. There is no reason not to set ourselves up for success by creating good SMART goals.

Step 3: Getting Healthy In Community

When trying to reach health goals it is important that we surround ourselves with others on a similar journey. This could look like using a health app that lets us stay on top of our goals. This could look like joining a Facebook group where we can talk about our successes and challenges. This might look like creating our own communities so we can connect with neighbors or friends who also want to go on a weekly jog or visit a different healthy restaurant each month.

Being connected to others makes it much more likely that we will be successful in the long term. It has been shown that we often pick up the habits of those who are in our social circles so we might as well work to surround ourselves with people who will help us develop healthy habits. Also, often when we feel connected, we feel better able to handle the normal challenges and setbacks that we face in our health journeys.

We all want to be healthy but all too often there are things getting in our way. We deserve to make sure that we are setting ourselves up for success.
