Police Increasingly Turning to Video to Catch Burglars

It may sometimes feel like cameras are watching us wherever we go. That may be true, but it might not be all bad. There is a silver lining to all the surveillance: police are increasingly turning to video footage to catch criminals. Burglars are especially vulnerable to video surveillance.

Take a recent case in Reno, Nevada. Two people, a man and a woman, were recorded breaking into multiple cars along a highway outside of town. The video surveillance showing the pair did not come from a local business or house. Rather, it came from multiple motion-sensitive cameras mounted inside an uninvolved vehicle.

Imagine being a burglar who knows enough to stay away from homes equipped with surveillance cameras or video doorbells. Instead, you target parked cars on a semi-rural highway popular with sightseers. Little do you know that one of those cars is equipped with surveillance cameras recording your every move.

Identifying the Thieves

As of early October 2020, the pair had not yet been apprehended. However, it is probably only a matter of time. This particular case is one in which the video footage is very clear. Someone in the Reno area probably knows these two people. And if not in Reno, people outside of the local area must know them.

That is one of the reasons police departments appreciate video surveillance as much as they do. Every criminal that has ever been recorded by a video camera is known by someone. It is just a matter of finding the right people who can make identification. Sometimes, the police themselves can do it.

There are times when individuals well known to police are dumb enough to allow their images to be recorded on video. There may be a telltale tattoo or scar investigators recognize from the footage, leading them right to the suspect. Is it any wonder police departments encourage the use of video doorbells and exterior surveillance cameras?

Video Surveillance and Home Security

Video surveillance is a normal part of home security these days. You can buy affordable DIY wireless systems that come with one or two cameras or a video doorbell. And of course, most systems can be scaled up according to need. Adding half-a-dozen cameras, or more, is not out of the question.

It didn’t use to be that way, according to Vivint Smart Home. In the days before wireless home security, homeowners had to pay for professionally installed systems that relied mostly on window, door, and motion sensors. The only cameras were closed circuit TV (CCTV) cameras. Their cost made them unaffordable to all but the wealthiest customers.

Much lower equipment costs and wireless technology now put video surveillance within reach of just about everyone. And in fact, consumers do not even have to purchase a complete security system to get the benefits of video surveillance. They can purchase a single camera and monitor it with a smartphone. Consumers can purchase a standalone video doorbell if they prefer.

The Burglar’s Worst Enemy

Video cameras are all around us. The prevalence of video is such that it is hard to get away with anything these days. Indeed, video is a burglar’s worst enemy in the technology age.

Are there too many video cameras out there? Perhaps. You could make the case that there is surveillance being conducted in places where it is not really necessary. But when push comes to shove, video can keep us safer in a litany of circumstances. Perhaps so much video surveillance isn’t necessarily a bad thing – at least where catching burglars is concerned.

Home Protection Systems

Everyone looks towards getting the right home protection system. The requirement of security and sense of safety is amongst the basic instincts of a human being. So, we strive hard to assure that we are protected well. In case of any danger, we fall into the land of doubt and fear. Thus, it is critical for all of us to take steps which enhance the feeling of security and allow us to work in peace. Today, the monitoring systems have come pretty far and it has become fairly easy to protect your home.

With the help of smart home protection systems, you can be certain that you and your loved ones are safe. If there is any danger, you’ll be alarmed and you can deal with it accordingly. Here, we will discuss a few pros of having a good protection system in your home.

Protect Your Belongings

With the help of smart security systems, protecting your home and belongings is pretty easy and effective. A few studies suggest that the burglaries cost around $1700 per victim. Usually, the burglars look towards expensive items that include costly electronics, drugs, and jewelry. As you integrate a smart system, it is possible that the burglars will run away without causing any harm. In case that any burglary proceeds, the security system and cameras offer a lot of help in catching the criminals.

Home Automation Becomes Easy

Most of the smart security systems come with the added benefit of automation. It becomes very easy to automate different aspects of your home such as electronics, doors, locks, lights, etc. Just by investing a little more, you can get a smart electronics worker to work along with your security team to automate your home thoroughly and make your life easy on you.

Access Your Home from Anywhere

Smart home security gives you a chance to monitor your home from anywhere in the world. All you need to acquire is an internet connection and a browser/app and you’ll be good to access your home security server and watch what is going around. For instance, your smart security system has a few cameras placed across your house. With its online feed, you can watch what is going and if there is something wrong you can immediately contact concerned departments for help.

Lower Your Home Insurance Rate

Home insurance rates depend on a number of different factors. However, installing a good security system can certainly lower the rates for you. If you are insuring your home and want to bring down the rates to a good extent, make sure that you have modern day security systems installed in your house. It helps the insurer in knowing that all the necessary steps are taken for the safety and security of your home and there are minimal chances of theft and burglary. So, they will happily provide insurance on reasonable pricing.

So, these are a few benefits of having a smart security system installed in your house. It helps to protect your home and gives you a peace of mind that no matter wherever you are your loved ones and belongings are safe and secure.

Intelligence Officers

Technology is changing how things work. It is continuously innovating to enrich the user experience while leaving a mark on every industry. Businesses are automating operations to ensure high levels of productivity, and suppliers are enjoying inventory management systems. Similarly, the proliferation of technology is also helping intelligence agencies to focus on high-value activities.

Intelligence officers no longer have to spend time doing monotonous manual tasks; instead, technology encourages them to take up creative assignments, which demands technical skills. After all, they have to be innovative and flexible to stay ahead of evolving security threats. Alongside this, technology holds a lot more for intelligence officers. So, here we are revealing how technology aids intelligence officers.

1. Automates Tasks with Artificial Intelligence

Previously, intelligence officers had to spend hours watching videos and scroll through thousands of photos to find a specific person or object. Things are no longer the same now, with the help of machine learning and artificial intelligence, software, and programs that can perform the same function in minutes.

At the same time, machines have the ability to sort and manipulate data according to the requirements and directly present results to humans. Hence, with new programs and applications, intelligence agencies can automatically give you insights on data. For instance, if officers are starting a new mission, they can convey their mission and goals to the software, and it would hand down all the information available.

However, the final decision is always in the hands of officers since they have to put their critical thinking and logical problem-solving skills to use. The purpose of automation is to reduce the burden on officers and keep them occupied with technical tasks. It is assisting intelligence officers in every way. If you are striving for this profession and wondering how to become an intelligence officer? Start searching online or seek help from Google.

2. Enhances Communication

We are living in the era of digitalization, where communication happens by making a few clicks. Officers no longer have to send paperwork or reports to decision-makers. Alongside having the risk of data theft, the files can even get lost, making you pay a heavy price. Thus, sharing files and coordination happens online through confidential emails and advanced programs.

Even though intelligence officers cannot use platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp, technology is permitting them to innovate programs on their own or use a global positioning system (GPS), satellite phones. They have a complex nature, and breaking through them is nearly impossible. Thus, it saves time and ensures a smooth communication process

3. Helps with Data Analysis

National security is a primary concern for authorities because one never knows when and where the significant threat would come from. Thus, the intelligence officers hold the bag for identifying potential risks to the nation and its citizens. It is essential to cease attacks before they cause any damage. Well, this becomes possible through the latest data collection tools that are a result of the technological revolution.

It is bringing artificial intelligence for officers to sort out large amounts of data and pull out specific targets. Perhaps, confidential information about terrorist attacks or enemy hideouts. This in-depth data analysis helps in preparing intelligence reports on nations while giving a head up on security threats. It not only allows them to stay one step ahead but enables officers to make relevant decisions.

4. Identifies Criminal Activity Through Biometrics and Tracking Tools

An intelligence officer understands the complexity of threats posed to the public. They encounter baseless rumors, making it challenging to differentiate between a rumor or a threat. At the same time, they have to keep an eye on terrorist activities, their safehouse, and every movement they make. The availability of tracking tools and biometric systems is helping officers locate criminal activity instantly.

Agencies no longer have to send officers or spies to monitor or locate criminals. Moreover, if officers find fingerprints on crime location, they can insert them into the system and find the person through biometric records. It would reveal the entire biodata through one fingerprint, helping officers find the culprits quickly.

Besides, the tracking tools with advanced functions can also detect unusual activity in a particular area and notify the officers immediately. Hence, it might recognize terrorist cells and illicit trade activities too.

5. Offers Cyber Security

In this technological era, the hackers are also becoming smarter, which means highly confidential data can be at risk of cyberattack. However, technology provides solutions for everything; intelligence officers can benefit from cybersecurity systems that protect data. So, rather than protecting data from threats, officers have the responsibility to assess risk.

They need to keep a vigilant eye, whether the internet of things is collecting data through one network or distributed networks. Similarly, the algorithms generating reports are only being shared with intelligence officers rather than the entire staff.

Wrap Up

Technology is changing things for everyone, even for experts, like intelligence officers. It is exposing them to quicker and more efficient ways to perform functions, ensuring maximum productivity. Alongside giving them a chance to utilize their technical skills, it is helping them stay ahead of the criminals. You can look above to see how technology aids intelligence officers.
