How Does a Man’s Sperm Reach a Woman’s Egg?

Once you are done having sex with your partner, there is not much you can do to enhance the chances of conception. Although the woman can lie down on her back with the butt elevated for around half an hour to help the sperm reach the egg, nothing else can be done. After sex, millions of sperms given off by the man travels inside the woman to reach the egg. The acids of the vagina form the first barrier that can easily kill the sperms. Add to that the fact that cervical mucus can easily cause an impenetrable frontier for the sperms. When a woman is most fertile, this cervical mucus will clear away on its own.

A man’s sperms have to travel around 7 inches from the cervix to the uterus followed by the fallopian tubes. If the sperms fail to locate the egg inside these fallopian tubes, the sperms can stay alive in the reproductive tract for around 3 to 5 days. It is important for you to understand that only a few sperms actually make it and have access to the egg. The others die along the course to the egg. Even for the sperms that actually make it to the egg, it is important for them to penetrate the egg first before the other sperms do. Once this successfully achieved, the egg changes and prevents other sperms to access the insides of it. It then gets fertilized within a day.

Then key to planning pregnancy is to determine when to ovulate. Once you know about this fact, you can easily understand when you will be most likely to be most fertile.
